I previously thought this class as writing-only class because I heard that different with my previous class, ESL 117-which covers grammar and writing, 101 focuses only on reading material and writing based on it. But this was totally different one. I should make conversations with my class members and also check their errors in essays.
I expect two major things for this class. I want to be a good college-level writer by having many writing chances through this course and by the in-class activities, become more fluent in english speaking as well. I hope that classmates and Ms.Evans gives me concise review about my assignment or essays and encourage to speak more so that I can settle in the "English" and "America" more easily and stably.
I have a concerns about some parts in the student guide and syllabus. Firstly, at the participation part in the first page of the syllabus, I wonder whether I can actively participate on constructive criticism because my shortest part at English is speaking especially resulted by my shy personality. Secondly, on the evaluation part in page 5 on the class description, It states that instructor will not correct spelling, punctuation, and sentence structure because it is my responsibility. This is a concern for me because I think I need a lot of checkings and advices to become skilled writer&speaker.
I think that writing several essays here could be the positive experience whatever the career I walk through. No matter which job I get, writing a paper or expressing my thought is inevitable thing. Through Outlining and writing and fixing the essay, I think I can acquire better understanding to myself and ability to develop my career. I wrote like I love to write, but actually I don't like writing that much till now. However, I think I can feel comfortable and like writing the essays when I finish this course.
I think you can still participate even though your shy. I say that because often we’ll be doing in-class peer review where you write on your partner’s paper. We also will be commenting on each others’ blogs. However, the small group work we do in class would be a good time for you to work on speaking more, especially if that’s something that you want to improve.
ReplyDeleteMy main focus for commenting will be about your ideas and how you put those into writing. If you want to meet with me about grammar, spelling, etc., I could help you in those ways too. (Although your English writing is already very, very good.) Just make sure you ask if you need help!
