Assignment 11

Question 1 :Whom is the composer including in the audience? Who is excluded from the audience-and why?

The author used tones of scholar words which is too hard for normal people to understand. She excluded non-expert  audiences. Stein rather targeted experts, who may have ability to comprehend this text as well as have will to read this.

Question 2 :Is there purpose clearly stated or easy to determine? If not, why might the composer have decided not to make the purpose obvious?

For my analysis through this text, the purpose of the article is to clearly analyze the macintosh advertisement in terms of theoretical framework which she stated on her essay. But it's not clear enough to determine whether this is her purpose or not, because there's too many possiblities that can be interpreted as author's purpose. For instance, author writes an paragraph look as if it is a purpose of her text in the end of the conclusion section. At there I confused that her purpose of writing was to promote good-technology development like Macintosh.

Question 3:When is an audience likely to encounter the text? How might this shape their responses?

The audience likely to encounter this text is the person who major on this subject or the expert who subscribe this scholarly journal, or english 101 students like me. Most of the reader is academically developed enough to discuss this kinds of complicated matter, so that the students who read this would say "What the hell is going on?", "It's too hard for me." . However, the targeted audiences like expert and writing-related subject major would say "Umm.. this sounds impressive. Let's discuss this at the conference."

These writerly choices combine each other and makes my interpretation knotty. I decided to interpret this as if I'm a expert rather than mere english 101 student who might read this article without knowing anything.   What's clear is that she wrote this to express her assertions related with 1984 Macintosh ad, as well as panicked many students who would likely to read this article.

[Group Work] Reflection

I didn't have opportunity to join in the 'Group Work'. I was sick at that day so that I overslept and missed my time to arrived on the class on time.

Working with others' ideas is hard because every people have their own personal background so that even with the same material, they approach through the different way.  To comprehend and compare them with my idea, I should catch up their context of interpreting the article, think of their choices, controlling purpose. However, other people's idea can help my essay to contain more object to interpret which is the author's writerly choice I didn't found out, also I can have a wider view analyzing the author's article.

Even though I didn't participated on the activity, I was surprised on the one-pager of 'conclusion'. Their pictures and words clearly summarizes the features of the ad. Their question is, 'What is Stein's view?'. I think that Sarah agrees with the idea of which the 1984 Macintosh is talking about. Like the apple wanted to achieve was a transition in control of technology from totalitarian instrument oppression to liberate force which in other words personal computers, Stein criticized the technophobia at 'Ultimately, the message of the Macintosh ad is an old one echoing cultural faith in the machine and in technology-endangered progress. Technology per se does not yield the Big Brother figure and its control over brainwashed and robotized masses.'(299). When I saw this paragraph she also thinks that right technology-which can be interpreted as Macintosh in the commercial- should flourish to make advancement in the world.

As I reading whole one-pagers, the question comes out in my head was 'DID SHE TALKED ABOUT COLDWAR??'. Actually, before reading the analysis one-pager, I've never knew about Stein talking about cold war.

tentative CP:  Author thinks that this advertisement is giving the world that their technophobia, which is a tendency of people having a fear on technological advancement. Stein says that the commercial tells us that Technology itself doesn’t have problems like Big Brother figure. The technology causes that kind of problem is wrong technology, and good technology will provide people a salvation. I’ve learned that even the simple 60-second-commercial can have a lot of meaning, method, and message. This was my first time to encounter analysis of advertisement.

Assignment 10 Question & Summary

Question 1 What is Stein's intent of analyzing 'Running Woman' deeply?

Question 2 What is Stein's attitude towards the technological development?

Summary

The 1984 Macintosh Ad: Cinematic Icons and Constitutive Rhetoric in the Launch of a New Machine is the article analyzing the advertisement of Apple broadcasted at 1984. Stein describes the contexts of the advertisement telling readers what was going on in the advertisement at the section 'Description of the text'. The essay flows to the section 'Theoretical frameworks', the section which introduces Charland's Constitutive Rhetoric, Robert Goldman's commodity-as-sign, Walter Benjamin's notion of re-enchantment though commodity images, gives the theoretical background of author to analyze the ad. The history of Macintosh and apple’s intention to do those, situation, and their supporter’s marketing strategy at ‘The Rhetorical History of the Macintosh’. Also, the author describes the atmosphere and situation of that time on ‘The Rhetorical Context of the “1984” Ad’. She analyzed the certain objects in the commercial as well as its motif based on her former set-up in the analysis section. Then, she summarized those and conclude with mentioning the advertisement’s message at the conclusion section.

As everyone knows that Steve Jobs made a great success on  1970's and 1980's as well as the time since late1990's. Especially the time when the Sarah wrote this article, the early 2000s, he was making a lot of money with 'Macintosh'. Because the company Apple and its product Macintosh is in dominant position in the market, 1984 Macintosh ad might have allured author a lot. Not only that, because  the commercial is evaluated as the turning point in advertising, Stein may thought this as her research topic.
I think she may wanted readers to understand her analysis about the commercial and agree to it. I can recognize her will when I was reading her conclusion section. At the conclusion, she interprets the ad's meaning as itself as well as the meaning of 'Running Women', and the message of the ad. It can be found on the sentences 'Freedom through revolution is the central theme of the ad, the power to revolt against tyranny and to act freely as an individual.'(298), 'The Running Women is successful at shattering the image of Big Brother in the "1984"ad,'(299), and 'Ultimately, the message of the Macintosh ad is an old one echoing cultural faith in the machine and in technology-endangered progress.'(299).

Assignment 9

This was the first time that I have a group conference. I thought it little bizarre, because I thought the conference was the meeting with instructor to get a revision and advice on my essay drafts. The reason why I had this stereotype was that I took ESL 117 last semester, and they have few group revision and the conference hour was totally personal meeting with instructor. I went to the conference with 'no thinking' in my head. As I arrived at the place, I, frankly speaking, was frozen. Really! Because of pressure that people will read my essay and evaluate it, also, I also have to read their essays and make comments on them. To make matters worse, I was not confident with my essay at all, because I wrote in rush, so that I wonder if the essay has some ridiculous ideas, which can make others laugh.
The essay attracted my interest most was the Ryan's essay. He starts his essay with simple joke, 'Every year a portion of our pay check is deposited into the state and federal governments' checking accounts. It's called paying taxes. It's not called Taxidermy.'(1).  Ryan used the similarity of pronunciation between tax and taxidermy. Even though it is not quite related to the content, however, relieve readers from tediousness. Also he used his own word 'guardians of history' to effectively deliver the function of the taxidermy described in the article.
I've noticed that I have several ideas of mine linked with ideas in  David's essay. I found author describing the attitude of people making taxidermy in ' "I love deer." one of the champions in the whitetail division said to me.'(2) and 'The ultimate goal of a taxidermists is to make the animal look exactly as if it had never died'(4), and David found out the attitude of taxidermists in the word 'zoology nerd', which he defined it as 'passionate and obsessive nature of the taxidermist'(2,David). I felt David has same feeling with me when he firstly(may be) encountered the word 'taxidermy by this essay when I reading his second paragraph's first sentence, 'It seems Orlean is well aware that Taxidermy is a rare trade and many people to do not understand about the trade, and she consciously written every detail to make the essay interesting and informative to all audiences'(1,David). As he did, I was not used to the concept of taxidermy, and because the taxidermy is unfamiliar subject to common people, I thought the reason why Susan gives a lot of information about taxidermy was to relieve that. David's approach is exactly same with me! This idea can be found on 'As I looked thorough the essay, this is the piece which introduces a lot about taxidermy.'(2, Seungmin) and 'I think the author wants readers to know more about taxidermy, not just treat them as the thing which feels weird, but the piece of art created by a lot of people's passions to make 'LifeLike' features'(2, Seungmin).
I think finding out the similar points and the other's bright ideas will make my writing better and better. This adds up to my sources to write, give a wider view through the article. Finding out the idea of other person which is similar with mine also helps me a lot because it gives me the feeling that my idea is great!, so that I can have confidence on my work.

Reflecting on Revision

My partner dropped the class. When I worked with him I returned his essay to him so I don't have any piece of work to discuss

Assignment 8

I was impressed that each person has various view towards same article. As I looked through other students' assignment about the article 'LifeLike', I've got the writerly choices that I didn't knew, also I can face their distinctive interpretation on same writerly choices. What I found out about the writerly choices of Susan Orlean, was focused on the good side of it. However, the one I read while commenting to other points out that her quotation distracts concentrating on the contents of the text. That was really fresh view for me. I think that he could widen his approach to the negative effects of the writerly choices the author made because he thought flexibly. For commenting on my assignments by myself, it has similar feeling when I was reading and commenting to others' assignments. It made me to read my writing objectively. I could find the positive sides of my essay like fresh expressions as well as the thing should be reinforced.  I should read the article more flexibly and view it at the multiple perspective next time. So that I'm gonna write my essay not stuck in limited view point, but consider a various aspects as well.
The audience of my essay might be unfamiliar to the article I'm talking about, so it is necessary to stating the context of the article and the reason of my thoughts. I will express my thought in a descriptive tone cause I'm interpreting this article and author's choices to the strangers who might don't know about the 'LifeLike'. I think my essay can be differentiated from others by expressions, the choice of author's writerly choices, and the feeling and thoughts about each writerly choices.

Assignment 7

Q1. Why do we think it is more reliable when quoting an actual people's saying in an article?
What I think is that by hearing the people who worked for and closely related to taxidermy, we can think that this information is based on people who actually make taxidermies. This fact is important because the experts' word is really trusted by people in many ways. We usually quote experts' saying to obtain ethos, the credibility. I believe that Orlean wanted to get the same effect as when we are quoting the saying of experts when we writing an essay.

Q2.  How can using a number in explaining the size of taxidermy industry can boost interest of the readers? Is there another effect of it rather than boost the interest of readers?
For me, number is a great indicator that helps me to assume how the thing is look like, how big it is. The context of using number was when she was explaining about the size of taxidermy industry, describe the taxidermy industry by using number gives credibility, not only that, it helps reader to assume the how big it is more easily and make them to have more interest on it , so this is the perfect choice for Susan to use number when she explains about taxidermy industry.  Not only for me, but for most of people, money is the thing attracts attention. I think author catches this mere fact and applied it on her article.
